Ways to Keep Dogs Mentally Stimulated With Toys And Activities

Jessica Cavallaro | Updated on July 14, 2023

Although physical exercise is essential for dogs, mental training is equally important for their well-being. Including mentally stimulating toys and activities in your dog’s daily routine can challenge their intellect, keeping them sharp, engaged, and happy. Here are some of the most effective (and fun) ways to keep dogs mentally stimulated!

Puzzle & Interactive Toys

Puzzle and interactive toys challenge your dog’s problem-solving skills while keeping them entertained. These toys often involve hiding treats or toys inside a ‘puzzle’ that your dog has to figure out how to solve to get to the reward. For younger pups developing problem-solving skills, easy games, squeaky toys, stuffable puzzles, and food dispensers are great starting points.

Agility Training

Agility training is a fun and challenging physical activity that also mentally stimulates your dog. It involves setting up an obstacle course for your dog to navigate through, crawl under, and jump over various objects. Agility training provides dogs with physical exercise, in addition to an increase in trust and a stronger bond with your dog. There are options to buy agility training sets online, or you can be crafty with a DIY set-up! Consider your dog’s capability, age, and size before starting any agility training, and therefore practice with a couple of obstacles and work their way up to more. If you are unsure if this is an appropriate exercise for your dog, check with your primary care veterinarian first.

Nose Work Games

We know dogs have an incredible sense of smell, but did you know for every scent receptor a human has, a dog has about 50? (CareCredit). Nose work (or scent work) is a perfect way to tap into a dog’s natural ability and keep them mentally stimulated. Hide various scents around your home or yard and encourage your dog to find them. Try walking your dog in different areas daily and allow them extra time to take in new and exciting scents!

Obedience Training

Obedience training is an excellent way to keep your dog’s mind sharp and bond with them.
